MY COACHING STORY

I chose the name PurposeFull for this endeavor because of something my Mom told me during my coaching program. I was struggling with being my own worst critic, being hard on myself as I often am. On lunch break one day, I called my Mom in hopes of gaining some clarity. "Have I always been like this??" I asked. Her response surprised me. She went all the way back to infancy: "What you were a baby," she said, "you were really intense." Then, she corrected herself, "No... purposeful. When you cried, you meant business. The message was 'C'mon people, I'm hungry! Let's get going here!'' I laughed because that's so me. She even contrasted this with my younger brother who would whimper, sending the message "Don't you love me?" Through this conversation, I learned that I've been a purposeful person since birth. Purpose and motivation come naturally to me. What I need to practice is being kind to myself, forgiving myself, being mindful, and being content. Which is why PurposeFull incorporates the word "full." I want clients to discover what is fulfilling to them and what would make their life meaningful.

But how did I even get here? I found coaching because of my love for helping people. When forced to pick a major in college, I chose Psychology because of my interest in people, why we make the decisions we do, why we struggle, and how we heal and motivate ourselves. This quickly evolved into a decision to pursue my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and a possible career as a therapist. I even practiced therapy during my two-years of internships during graduate school. But I found that I enjoyed leading the Social Work Student Association more and that organizing people for a good cause was even more motivating. So I took a leap of faith and tried my hand in the federal government. Hey, it's still helping people, but just in a different way, right? I enjoyed being a "careerist" for over 7 years, climbing the ladder, leading change initiatives, and even ending up in Human Resources where I recruited and developed new employees. But something was missing...

I left government in early 2015 to pursue my career as a Facilitator and Program Manager at a nonprofit whose mission is to make government more effective. I got out of my one agency, and now I work with agencies and federal employees across the country who are pursuing a wide range of missions. I received my formal coaching education in 2019 from the Georgetown University Institute for Transformational Leadership. What I love about coaching is the opportunity to be fully present for another person. Coaching conversations are not only interesting, but they are PURPOSEFUL. Helping clients tap into their intentions, values, and goals motivates me to do what I do.
